I like this album too, even though it probably isn't combative for most people. I've already outed myself as a Lovers fan and on Rootsman dub or Hopeless dub I just melt away. It's not my fault that I'm such a softie; I don't have to like everyone. I also think the Congos cover is cute. With Kunta Kinte, I can understand why some people might shake their heads. ;)
I especially love the first two versions with that dissonance in the organ towards the end... it sounds "wrong" and then exactly as it should... brilliant! I almost think I've heard similar chords like these before in Augustus Pablo's work...
