In my opinion, the natural habitat of steppers is the sound system. But it also works at home on the sofa - provided the loudspeakers are big enough and the neighbors are out of the house. Then it can be great fun to physically experience music and sink into the all-encompassing bass all-over. Annoyingly, there are far too few steppers replenishments that, in addition to the physical experience, also offer a minimum of entertainment for the head (yes, even with a lot of bass you can get bored). Most good productions are dead Dubplates and are only given live for the best. If you want to experience the sound at home, you can start collecting 12 “singles or EPs. But if you - like me - love the album format, you often find yourself on dry land. Every now and then, however, there is a ray of hope that promises a few good hours on the sofa: "Some good days“(Odgprog) from Tiburk for example. The Frenchman delivers ideal typical steppers - hard, uncompromising, with massive basslines - but also with pretty, small melodies, interesting arrangements, varied breaks and a clever mix. If he were to let go of the electro-synth sound a little, his music would be perfect - for the sound system and for the sofa.

First of all, I would like to fully agree with what you are writing about the Steppas styles in general. If you read my comments on it, you might think that I even hate steppas. But that's not true at all. There are many steppaDubs that I really love. But they don't just have a bass, they also have a bassline. Yes, and bassline alone doesn't make the cabbage fat either. The bassline also has to groove and it should also have a certain amount of groove Dub-Can convey reggae magic. All of this is no longer so easy and natural to do. Especially not with a few clicks of the mouse. And I will probably repeat myself for the umpteenth time (until the last person understands) when I say that a computer does not Dub-Can create atmosphere. Maybe you can still create the individual tracks with Pro-Tools and if you are musically gifted, it can groove quite well but the mix has to be ANALOG! Nothing else Dub-The atmosphere !!! If you don't believe me, ask them Dub-Wizzards a la Adrien Sherwood, Prince Fatty, Victor Rice, Mad Professor and Lee "Scratch" Perry and I'm sure Umberto Echo and him too Dubvisionist don't feel any different. The whole Dub-Production makes loud with an analog mixer Dub-Producers also have a lot more fun because you can act much more spontaneously and because you can feel the lever and its effect much better than if you just slide a mouse back and forth. The whole handling is much more lively and not as sterile and laborious as with a pure computerdub. The only advantage this type of production has is that it is much cheaper. In my opinion, the young generations can be fobbed off too cheaply because they simply haven't gotten to know good quality. Even the sprockets on a bicycle are nowadays deliberately produced as cheaply as possible so that they have to be bought again as soon as possible.
And now a few words about "some good days". Yes, there are a few nice little melodies and a few alternating breaks, but I haven't found any interesting arrangements yet. You write yourself that he could let go of the electro-synth sound a little more. I would like to go one step further and claim that the quality doesn't seem to have gotten better since the Pc-64 and the Nintendo (or whatever it is called) (is that sentence really correct?). When I listen to it, I have that extremely Dubatmosphere - which even King Tubby managed to improve 40 years ago - is missing. It sounds sterile and basically musically dead. I would say that everything here is digital. Both the instruments and the Dub-Mix. That's why it sounds cold and dead. If I am wrong, at least he did something wrong anyway.

That with the Dubplates is correct. But since hardly anyone has an adequate system at home AND compatible neighbors, that's probably ok for most of them. Steppers on a € 80 Logitech system? Then rather roots from the medium wave radio.

Even the simple symple burning or the compilation of a favorite CD (it used to be called: putting together a great cassette) is extremely hard on my scrotum with the computer. Here, too, I completely lack spontaneity. Everything has to be put on the hard drive somehow. Then there are names of songs and performers in some completely sterile table. You then have to move this completely anonymously and again sterile with the mouse to any other table. Regardless of whether I put on some kind of sound that I hear on the side, the whole process somehow feels a lot like work and ultimately takes about an hour or more. When recording a cassette, the compilation was always nice and spontaneous and you were there, so to speak, live and had a lot of fun while recording. Even when burning CD's, it was still great fun with an analog mixer and a burner that allowed analog burning. Unfortunately, Babylon Industries has always fooled us (and especially me) by simply not bringing out uniform blank CDs and now no longer producing any blanks that run in my burner. They want to force me again to buy everything new and then play the same game against myself.
Here, too, some will probably ask themselves, what is the old man doing? but I miss it all so much that I could cry from morning to night. Please don't tell me that everything works the same with the computer. That's just not true. In addition, many of the new computer CDs do not work in every CD player. Well, ok, admittedly, my cassettes don't play in every CD player either ;-).
Ghetto Priest also just said in an interview that you just have to adapt to the changes. As much as I like him, I'd like to tell him this is bullshit. The quality at Bandcamp is excellent. Sometimes terrible on YouTube, but increasingly bearable. From the BC downloads (ideally flac but even the 160k m4a files actually sound transparent) you can create CDs with little effort with which you can do whatever you want. In the same way, you can play the files on your PC and record them in mono on a 70/1 track tape from the 4s. I do that too ... well, not quite. I have a small Sony WM-D6C, a kind of reporter device with a cassette, but it sounds better than most of the tape decks I've ever had. It then comes to the line-out of the mixer, and then the session is recorded for 2x45 minutes. Most of the time, the tape ends at the best point. Like in old times.
It's all much cheaper today than it used to be. I like to call this the “democratization of the means”. This is the only reason why we can enjoy such fringe group music in all its diversity without having to constantly order sound carriers for a lot of money halfway around the world, one in five of which arrives defective or not at all. For the majority, the development is just an advantage and thus it prevails. By the way, not only in Babylon but globally everywhere ... the barter is a blessing and a curse, but that doesn't really belong here.
The comparison with climate change, however, lags enormously. Anyone who deals with it (and has a somewhat scientific claim, i.e. not only calculating with the numbers of any conspiracy pages but simply comparing how much heat humans release annually from fossil fuels and how that is in relation to the average solar radiation) quickly reaches the goal that many Babylon's protagonists benefit from the fact that many believe it is not that bad. Yes, there are similar developments on the other side. However, a few (financial) orders of magnitude below that. But it certainly doesn't belong here;)
By the way, there were already CDs and records from Kanka, but probably no more of the last two albums due to lack of demand.

Yes, the comparison with climate change was unfortunate insofar as it is probably true that humans even affect the climate. Actually I only came across the climate because for me it really is something like force majeure. Even if humans now have full responsibility for climate change, for me it still remains force majeure. It seems to me to be much more difficult to adapt the climate to people than to shape technical developments in a humane manner. Hopefully this will turn out to be more of a shoe.
Bandcamp actually has a great service. I've just fought my way through almost all of Kanka's albums and I have to say, I don't think it's that great either. But there are some great snacks included. You can even buy a CD at irie records but somehow I don't really like it.

I spoke of cassettes, but only to illustrate the feeling of being recorded and the fun factor associated with it. I don't want to go into the cellar every evening and drag a bucket full of brown coal upstairs and then heat it up with coal again. Although that actually makes a lot more pleasant warmth. So practically "analogue warmth" ;-).

I also do not know to what extent you have all adopted these expressions such as Babylon and JAH in your own vocabulary. I use both words every day and sometimes very often during the day. People who didn’t like reggae as much as I did, might smile about it because of me, but for me these words are program. Everything was meant well, for everyone. I feel like a sucker myself about this. I've been with audio files (mostly mp20) for almost 3 years now, but of course I had tapes before that. And MiniDisc. I still regret the money I threw out the window for hardware and media.
The exclusivity is practically completely gone because you get everything more or less known for free and the search for treasures is only a few EUR away for a download. As already mentioned, everything has advantages and disadvantages. I prefer to enjoy the benefits rather than complaining.
What you say about religions and especially about extremists can be signed. Unfortunately, many of my heroes (e.g. the Bobo 'Shanti, like Capleton) are not exactly politically correct. As a reflected person (within the scope of one's own possibilities) celebrating someone like that live is something of bigotry ...
I still think Kanka is great. His album “Submersion” was a bit of my entry into the steppas subgenre. And as is so often the case, chance played a big role: first I find the album on a Romanian download page, it runs up and down in the iPod. In the same year, at a clandestine open air session, a selector that I know only fleetingly plays the "Rome" vinyl on a pretty decent PA.
Something like that.
